From everything I've heard recently, it hasn't exactly become easier to be gay in South Africa, even though the country is among the relatively few that offer same-sex marriage. This happened on December 1st 2006, when only the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Cananda and Massachusetts allowed same-sex marriage.
However, just recently ESPN had a special on the "Corrective Rape" of lebians in South Africa - you can read more about it and watch it here.
This design is probably five years old by now, but the soccer World Cup in South Africa in the summer of 2010, just reminded me of its origin. Also, this design has come to be a sort of personal tribute to the LGBT people of South Africa, who keep on fighting in the face of serious opposition.
